I've also led workshops, undertaken commissions and residencies for many arts organisations, freelanced and have been working for the UAL since 2000 firstly at London College of Fashion and then at Chelsea College of Arts. White Square Teaching Award Certificate Winner 2013 and Teaching &amp; Learning Exchange Teaching Award winner in 2016. Working in Design I’ve undertaken multiple collaborations with Montage Theatre Arts, Mem Morrison Company and Bruce McLean developing a body of work examining the technical and creative boundaries of working with physical, spatial and digital elements. I graduated from Central Saint Martin's College of Art &amp; Design, Scenogrphic Design MA in 2000, also studying at Hochschule fur Gestaltung und Kunst (Zurich). I started out as a freelance graphic designer in the 90's and quickly gravitated toward extending the possibilities of interactive design and motion graphics in a performative/time-based context. Collaborating with Judy Gordon (Artistic Director of Montage Theatre Arts ) in 1998 we created a series of digital performance experiments which then grew into our first touring digital work Lightlines. This utilised digital drawing and interactive motion graphics projected over actors and musicians. Followed by The Struggle for Utopia and arts residencies for South East Arts/Arts Council funded Brighton Lighthouse and Stour Valley Arts, where we created the interactive CD-ROM, Figments. "...Occasionally one comes across something which confirms ones missionary belief in the potential of digital arts, and the Montage show was one such memorable occasion." Tim Cornish, South East Arts. We also collaborated on Sorry, which me did you mean? for Resolution at the Place in 2001 which combined dance and live interactive projection with actors and dancers encountering and performing with duplicate versions of themselves. I started developing my motion capture series in 2001 entitled Space Over Time where the movements of physical theatre performers during groupwork exercises were captured using 2d motion capture and the data was used to drive animations which then took on human movement qualities. I revisited this technique in 2010 with the The Life Room at Chelsea Space (Chelsea College of Art &amp; Design) to capture gym equipment users in motion, creating animation sequences which built over the life of the exhibition. This has led to collaborations with artist Bruce Mclean including A Hot Potato Against a Dark Background which used a blend of motion capture animation, live interactive graphics and miniature sets filmed live and reprojected onto a 30m wide purpose built stage. I have also been working with Artsadmin performance artist Mem Morrison and his company on Ringside, Tebrik, Leftovers and Talawa's TYPT as well as his latest work in 2016 LUMINOUS performed at SPILL. I worked on projects for the Millenium Dome, leading a week long digital performance workshop for Penn State University with Judy Gordon, teaching with London College of Fashion, projects for Entelechy Arts extending the possibilities of robotic control filmmaking to those with physical disabilities with installation artist Malcolm Buchanan-Dick, and various commercial projects in performance design and graphic design. My work with Chelsea has brought me into contact with many practitioners and companies during numerous 'live projects'. Delivering both the course programme and used digital production, scenographic design and installation. Work includes most noteably with the BBC and James May projecting giant live interactive graphic treatments onto the side of the Royal Festival Hall or working on projects with students; for the D&amp;AD student awards which Chelsea regularly wins, Ministry of Sound, E4, Sky Arts and many more plus 15 major exhibitions which I have co-produced and constructed with student teams receiving critical praise. In 2009 I exhibited in 'The Life Room" at the Chelsea Space where I made motion captured digital animation portraits of a series of guests picked for their physical presence. I have been working at carrying out both research and as an artist in major projects with renowned artist Bruce McLean, working in close collaboration together. A Cut, Scratch and a Score was shortlisted for the Venice Biennale - Scottish Pavilion 2013. Working in Education Since 2000 I have been working with students at Chelsea College of Art &amp; Design BA/ in Graphic Design Communication. This role has encompassed academic teaching: Course Leader 2015 - present and co-leading the second year '14/'15. Previously technical teaching - software (print design/moving image/digital), process and leading several design projects on a regular basis. Many of these including working between companies and the college such as the BBC, Apple, Ministry of Sound, Kokuyo, SKY, BBH, Spring Studios, Tate Britain, and many more. PGCert. UAL Teaching &amp; Learning Exchange. Winner of many D&amp;AD New Blood awards with students since 2000 - YCN awards also. In 2011 I led the production of all the winners of the SKY ARTS stings awards were from the Graphics course at Chelsea who went on again to win in 2012. Working with the BBC and James May's Production team I led a group of students in producing a giant interactive graphic installation projected on the side of the Royal Festival Hall for the programme 'James May's - My Sisters Top Toys'. I am also instrumental in delivering the annual student exhibitions (see exhibition design section) which are taken to extreme professional lengths at Chelsea and include moving image design, scenographic design, design for print, lighting, interactive media, 3d design, event organisation and project management.. 2014: more collaborations with Artist Bruce Mclean, Designed an exhibition based on drawings that went into the 2012 Olympic Games as well as more academic collaborations and competition wins. 2014 &amp; 2016 Visited the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts in China to install a special joint exhibition between Chelsea College of Arts and Siva at The Powerstation of Art exhibition space and later in 2016 to take part in the Summit Forum of Art &amp; Design Education where I was a keynote speaker and to take part in collaborative exchange student project.. 2017 Course Leader at Chelsea College of Arts: BA Graphic Design Communication. I set about deconstructing the whole book, cutting up the sheets and getting creative with bits of balsa, a camping bed roll, some walking poles and plenty of masking tape. barnett https://davidbarnett.me/Mind-States Mind States Ongoing series 2019/20 Is it possible to represent a state of mind? Looking for a sense of resolution or a point of balance of ideas, or a place where something has been achieved of worth either visually or in the relationships portrayed - guide these compositions. I've waited for a moment when iv'e been really stressed, under pressure or feeling in some way 'altered', to make them as a response. I'm hoping these will visualise how my brain is feeling under these conditions and is the closest I can get to unconsciously showing these states and what my mind looks like as images. There are some guidelines to reading these - I tend to relate to objects as people or prevailing moods and their relationships in space are driven by those relationships in spatial terms. The translation into varying colour versions is not random these are lenses that show different views on the same idea - not all colours work but they are all aimed at revealing a state most effectively and most mental states are not singular they are nuanced and can't be seen only as a single aspect. Being a creative I need to find a way to express these states when they happen, there is no cathartic or therapeutic aim and they don't relieve or change my state in any way. There are no distinct objects as I would usually use *, and digital tools allow me to create colour where I need it to create depth and a sense of spatial tone. I wanted to find something more granular and less hard then the vectors I usually adopt which need to be painted or cut from card or printed in certain ways to give them a sense of texture which is david barnett https://davidbarnett.me/The-Changing-Room The Changing Room Motion Graphics sequences and digital Scenography for The Changing Room an inter-disciplinary multi-screen and mixed media live work. "Performance and live action have been pivotal to Bruce McLean's art from the 1970s onwards. To accompany McLean's exhibition 'Another condition of sculpture' the artist presents a new live work, a chamber opera, realised in collaboration with Sam Belinfante and Lawrence Preece, in the dramatic setting of the Tiled Hall, once the Gallery's sculpture court." Based on Courbet’s painting 'The Painters Studio', conflated with Breughel’s 'The Blind Leading the Blind', The Changing Room is a true Gesamtkunstwerk where musical improvisation is combined with a choreography of objects, video and movement. Through the deconstruction and collision of these historical works the artists have developed a series of drawings that address the perennial artistic dilemma; how to recognise and represent what is heard and not heard and what is seen, as well as, significantly, what is invisible. The libretto is derived from Jacques Derrida’s ‘Memoirs of the Blind’ where the philosopher similarly explores issues of vision, blindness and self-representation, particularly in relationship to drawing. 'These amassing drawings function as graphic scores that will be interpreted by performers in a series of guided improvisations.
